Fic: Will and Last Testament (Coda Secondo)
My apologies, I know I said that I would post this earlier. I'm beginning to think that I should write grocery-store romance novels. This one's far fluffier than the first. Let me know what you think of it :)
Title: Last Will and Testament, Coda Secondo Pairing: SS/RL Word Count: 1059 Summary: The second of two possible outcomes to Remus' quest to save Severus' life. Chapter Rating: PG-13 Category: Drama Warnings: references to torture, violence
There was a flash of light, screaming, a flurry as wands were drawn too late. A strong pair of hands lifted him from the floor, and then, darkness.
---
Remus breathed heavily, bleeding and almost out of breath, but driven by the prospect of saving his charge. In his arms he held a heavily injured Severus Snape.
The gates to Hogwarts opened before Remus even reached them, and he found himself staring at Dumbledore, who was smiling radiantly.
“I knew you could do it, my boy.”
---
Severus groaned softly as he awoke, a throbbing headache clouding his senses. At least, that was the only explanation he could arrive at. He couldn’t be in his room. That couldn’t be Lucius, sitting rather comfortably in his large armchair, just putting down the Daily Prophet that he was reading by candlelight, with that damn amused smile on his face.
“You’re awake.”
“So it would seem.” Severus’ voice cracked from the screaming he recalled doing earlier.
“I told you I wouldn’t let you die.” Lucius said softly, still smirking.
“Yes, and I distinctly recall promising that I’d hex you into oblivion if you tried anything so foolish as rescuing me.” Severus snapped.
“Luckily, as a Slytherin, I didn’t really have to.” Lucius said lazily, putting down his paper and stretching backwards in his chair. “You can save your hexes for the werewolf.”
“Lupin?” Snape nearly sat up with a jolt, before falling short from the pain it caused. Then something struck him. “Oh Merlin, you gave him the letter didn’t you?” He moaned.
“As you instructed, old friend,” Lucius answered with a grin. “It was quite the show, according to Avery. Or I imagine it is what he would have said, if he could talk. Evidently Lupin tore out his tongue after he called you a...”
---
"You will never say such a thing, ever again."
A cruel laugh. "I'd like to see you try to make me."
"Certainly."
---
"Now that you mention it, I do recall that vaguely." Severus mused, mildly impressed by Lupin's imagination.
"Indeed? Your would-be executioners came back looking horrible. Remind me never to cross a werewolf."
Severus frowned. “Where is he now? Is he alright?”
“A few stitches. He returned looking much healthier than you yourself,” Lucius looked almost concerned.
---
"Well this has been fun, Severus, but I do wish that there was someone else we could be torturing in front of you instead. A close relative? A secret lover?"
"Now that you mention it, Avery, it would pain me immensely if you were to stab yourself in the face."
"A bastard to the end, eh Snape? You see, that's exactly why nobody likes you. Crucio!"
---
"All in a day's work." Severus said dryly.
Lucius frowned. "It shouldn't have to be."
"I don't recall you being in a better position, Lucius."
"Unlike you, I did not take on unnecessary dangers, such as becoming a spy, Severus." Malfoy's voice became softer.
Angry. But almost fragile, Severus mused. He wasn't accustomed to this tone of voice and it made him uncomfortable.
He closed his eyes. "It wasn't personal."
"I know that." Lucius said tersely. "But why?"
"You know why."
Lucius laughed, but his eyes still flashed with resentment. "He'd better be worth it, for all the trouble he's put us through."
"I know he is." Severus said softly. It was Malfoy's turn to feel discomfitted. After contemplating his friend's words for awhile, his frown suddenly returned.
“But you do know the other reason for my visit.”
Severus grimmaced. “Of course.”
“The Dark Lord would not take kindly to me if I did not attempt to kill you, given such a golden opportunity to do so.”
Severus laughed hollowly and closed his eyes, leaning back into his pillows. “And I promised that I would not oblige you.”
Lucius stood up and raised his wand ruefully. He cleared his throat.
“Avada Ka—“
A roar interrupted his spell, followed by a loud crash. Remus lunged at Malfoy, pinning him to the ground. Teeth clenched, he began punching Lucius hard in the jaw, repeatedly, until he heard Severus laughing.
Remus looked up in confusion, never having heard this particular sound before.
“I didn’t think your memory was quite so short Lucius.” Severus coughed, out of breath and in a fair bit of pain. “Never cross a werewolf indeed.”
Lucius scowled, then turned his eyes up to Remus. “You imbecile, you didn’t think that I would have gone to all the effort persuading you to save him just to kill him myself?”
“I wasn’t so sure.” Remus glared back.
“At least you can return to the Dark Lord with the bruises to prove that you tried.” Severus was still amused.
“Wait, you’re going to let him go?”
“I never thought I’d see the day where I would pardon a man when you would not, Lupin.” Severus raised an eyebrow. He paused. “And I suppose I nearly didn’t see the day.”
Remus stood up and begrudgingly gave his hand to Lucius, who promptly refused to accept it.
“That’ll do, wolf, that’ll do.” Lucius said smugly.
“Oh, fuck off.” Remus shot back.
“Charming.” Lucius was smirking again. “As enjoyable as this visit has been, I'm afraid that I must go. I was promised sanctuary for 24 hours and it has been three days. The Dark Lord believes that I am collecting streeler venom in Morocco. Which, by the way, I’ve borrowed from your stores, Severus,” Lucius added with another infuriating smile. “Hope you don’t mind”.
Snape rolled his eyes in mock frustration. Lucius laughed at this, and stood up to leave.
“A pleasure as always, Severus. Lupin.”
Remus nodded curtly in response.
Severus and Lucius regarded each other for a moment longer. It was then that Remus realized the two might never meet again in such friendly circumstances.
“You don’t have to go back, you know.” Severus said quietly.
“You know that I do.” Lucius smiled painfully. "Not all of us have knights in shining armor. Narcissa would break a nail and that would be the end of the rescue attempt." He sharply turned to Remus. “Take care of him.”
Remus nodded again, this time offering a resolute smile.
“Why Lucius, I didn’t know you cared.”
“I am offended, Severus. Of course I care. Who else will bail me out if the Dark Lord falls?”
Severus smirked. “Take care of yourself.”
“No worry. It is what I do best, after all.” Lucius drawled. Severus rolled his eyes again as Lucius left with a small bow and a flourish of his cape.
A silence passed between the two remaining men.
Remus drew a breath to speak but was interrupted.
“And you. Don’t even get me started on your incompetence. What part of my instructions did you not understand? Can none of you follow simple orders?”
Remus found himself grinning uncontrollably. “I understood that you loved me, and that was enough.”
"Lovely, a romantic." Severus rolled his eyes yet again, but also looked as though he was trying very hard to suppress a smile. "Seeing that my commands mean nothing to you then, Lupin, what do you suggest we do now?"
Taking off his shoes, Remus joined Severus on the bed and drew him in for a careful embrace.
"Well, I did promise Lucius that I would take care of you," Remus purred, leaning in close to Severus' ear.
Severus shivered at the timbre of the werewolf's voice.
"But seeing your delicate condition, perhaps we should save the strenuous activity for another time." Remus said playfully.
Snape narrowed his eyes. Remus saw the rebuttal forming on Severus' lips, and decided that the most efficient way stop it was with a long, lingering kiss.
He drew back to find the Potions Master regarding him closely, and, to his surprise, warmly.
Finding himself un-hexed, Remus reached for his wand and cast a quick spell to put out the candles, and settled by nuzzling Severus' neck. "I love you too, Severus."
Severus scowled. He thought that it was overwhelmingly clear that he did not snuggle. Evidently, he thought, as he slowly gave into comfort and drowziness, he was mistaken.
